    • Winehouse, de dochter van een Londense taxichauffer en een apotheker, bracht haar eerste albumFrank uit in oktober 2003. Ze was toen twintig jaar oud. Het album was meteen een groot succes in Groot-Brittannië, maar haar eerste grote hit Rehab stond op haar tweede plaat, Back to Black, die ze in 2006 uitbracht. Het album won vijf Grammy Awards en was het bestverkochte van de jaren 2000 in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

      Ze werd wereldberoemd met haar unieke stemgeluid en combinatie van jazz, soul, rock en popmuziek. Maar samen met het wereldwijde succes, begon in 2007 ook de ellende voor de zangeres. Ze was een geliefd slachtoffer van de Britse tabloids, niet alleen door haar verslaving, maar ook door haar knipperlichtrelatie met ex-man Blake Fielder-Civil, gezondheidsproblemen, depressies en eetstoornissen.

      De zangeres stond ook bekend om haar opvallende look. Weinig kleren, veel tatoeages (minstens twaalf) en een kapsel om u tegen te zeggen. Ook haar make-up look met véél zwarte eyeliner werd vaak gekopieerd.

      Ze werd zaterdag 23 juli 2011 dood gevonden in haar woonst in Londen. Winehouse is amper 27 jaar oud geworden.

      De naam van Winehouse komt, zoals lang werd gevreesd, bij op de imposante lijst van rocksterren die stierven op hun 27ste, zoals Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison en Kurt Cobain.
