    • L'envoyé spécial américain pour le Pakistan et l'Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke, hospitalisé à Washington, est mort à l'âge de 69 ans.

      Victime d'un malaise vendredi, M. Holbrooke avait subi une longue opération de l'aorte, puis une deuxième intervention.

      La secrétaire d'Etat Hillary Clinton avait indiqué que Richard Holbrooke se trouvait dans un "état très critique". Quelques heures avant l'annonce de son décès, le président Barack Obama avait assuré que M. Holbrooke est un "dur à cuire".

      "Richard est acharné, il ne s'arrête jamais", avait lancé M. Obama lors d'une réception au département d'Etat. "L'Amérique et le monde sont plus sûrs grâce au travail de l'ambassadeur Richard Holbrooke", artisan de l'accord qui a mis fin à la guerre en Bosnie, avait-il dit.
