    • De speciale VS-vertegenwoordiger voor Afghanistan en Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, is op 13 december 2010 overleden in Washington. Holbrooke werd in het ziekenhuis opgenomen en geopereerd aan een gescheurde aorta. Hij werd 69 jaar.

      Holbrooke was, tijdens een onderhoud met de minister voor Buitenlandse Zaken Hillary Clinton, ingestort. Artsen hebben meer dan twintig uur geopereerd om zijn gescheurde aorta te herstellen. 

      In een verklaring zei president Barack Obama dat hij met zijn echtgenote gebeden heeft voor Holbrooke. Hij zei dat de topdiplomaat zeer belangrijk is voor het buitenlands beleid van Amerika. De president noemde Holbrooke een 'werkelijk uniek persoon die herinnerd zal worden om zijn niet aflatende diplomatie, de liefde voor zijn land en zijn streven naar vrede'. 

      De Amerikaanse minister van buitenlandse zaken Hillary Clinton beschreef Holbrooke als een van Amerika's 'meest toegewijde ambtenaren'. Obama en Clinton prijzen hem als 'de reus van de Amerikaanse diplomatie'. Hij stond ook bekend als 'de bulldozer', een man van de harde lijn.

      De 69-jarige Holbrooke is een van de belangrijkste Amerikaanse diplomaten van de voorbije decennia. Hij is vooral bekend geworden als bemiddelaar bij de oorlog in Bosnië en stond aan de wieg van het vredesakkoord van Dayton uit 1995.
